Laker High School sophomore Isiah Gray-Shivley was chosen as the Elkton VFW first place winner for his essay about American history. His essay, entitled “Our Hopes for the Future,” is about how today’s youth should consider the country’s past while continually pushing forward to address important issues and make the U.S. an even greater country. Getting a college education, Isiah noted, is an important step in this effort.
“With consideration of the past and tenacity towards our goals, the youth will make this country great again,” Isiah wrote.
Isiah will now compete at the state competition on January 19 and 20. If he is chosen for first place at the state level, he will receive a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national competition, where he could receive as much as $30,000 for college.
Laker High School English teacher Julie Stoyka assisted Isiah with his essay.
