This year’s March is Reading Month theme is Reading is Sweet, and students were given an opportunity to design the official T-shirt for the month. The T-shirt had to include the “Reading is Sweet” theme. Third-grader Evan Salas decided to take on the challenge, even though he knew he would be going up against all grade levels, including fifth graders. His design ended up being the winner!
Evan’s design includes a doughnut with frosting and sprinkles, the words “Reading is Sweet” drawn in sprinkles (“That took a long time,” he said), and a chocolate-dipped Laker Elementary, along with some other candies. He said his father, Brent, helped him with ideas.
Evan, who said he’s been drawing since he was a toddler, said he’s very proud of himself for entering the contest and for winning. He also loves the fact that last year, his twin brother, Eli, won the exact same competition. The March is Reading Month theme last year revolved around space.
“(When I won), everyone kept telling me, ‘Bro, that’s such a coincidence because your twin brother won last year,'” Evan noted.
Evan said his two artistic inspirations are his dad and Leonardo da Vinci. His goal – to make the next “Mona Lisa.”
