Laker High School earns GreatSchools’ 2022 College Success Award
National recognition celebrates public high schools that prepare students to enroll and succeed in college
(Sept. 22, 2022) Laker High School is proud to announce that it has received a prestigious College Success Award from GreatSchools, the nation’s leading nonprofit providing school information to parents and families. The annual recognition honors schools that excel at preparing students to enroll and succeed in college, as determined by available data in each state.
Laker High School is among 1,742 high schools from 25 states, and among 154 schools in Michigan, that have demonstrated a successful track record of graduating students who enroll in two- or four-year college, are ready for college-level coursework, and persist on to their second year.
“We are extremely excited to be recognized by GreatSchools with the College Success Award,” said Laker High School Principal Jon Good. “The staff at Laker High School takes great pride in the work we do to prepare our students for their future, whatever path they choose.”
Good credits the school’s project-based learning approach for their successful track record, as it encourages students to study subjects of their choice in greater depth.
“We believe that students are more involved when they are working on something that is of interest to them,” he said. “The project-based learning approach encourages students to extend their learning to solve real-world problems. Student learning is grounded in the core academic areas and enhanced in a variety of electives and extracurricular activities. Our tremendous community support allows us to offer extra opportunities to help ensure that every student experiences success. Students are surrounded by support to help them achieve their educational goals. It truly is a great day to be a Laker.”
Good also believes that a student’s success is measured by more than just scores.
“We acknowledge this award for what it is — recognition that a significant percentage of our recent graduates pursued the path to college,” he said. “However, that is not our ultimate measure of success. Our goal is to prepare all students for a successful future with whatever path they choose beyond high school. We celebrate when students announce that they have chosen to serve our country in the military just as we do when they sign their letter of intent to play college athletics.”
School officials also note that Laker High School leads Huron County in dual enrollment students and has many other programs to help prepare students for life after high school, including apprenticeships, a Senior Strategies class, the Innovation Center and in-house career tech programs, and many students attending the Huron Area Technical Center.
“We applaud Laker High School for prioritizing a high-quality public education that puts students on the path to bright futures,” said Jon Deane, CEO of GreatSchools. “It’s inspiring to see how an entire school community — students, teachers, and families — can work together in pursuit of a common goal: success for all. Congratulations to Laker High Schoo for receiving the College Success Award as proof of their hard work and dedication.”
